Character Name: Cmdr. John Crichton
Series: Farscape
Age: 32
From When?: Season 3, Episode 8. Green Eyed Monster. Post episode.

Note: At this point in canon there exist two John Crichtons. They are usually referred to as Green Shirt Crichton or Black Shirt Crichton. This application is for Black Shirt Crichton. This is the Crichton that, when the two were split, went aboard the ship Talyn. (More about all this in the history links.) He is also the Crichton who, later in this season, is fated to die while the other goes on to complete the season and take over as the single Crichton for the remainder of the show. It is important to note that Black Shirt Crichton's canon stops at Season 3, Episode 15.

Inmate/Warden: Warden - John Crichton is always striving to do the right thing, or what he thinks is the right thing. He’s struggled a lot with the terrible choices he’s had to make in his recent past; sometimes his endeavors to do right only end in more pain and sorrow. But despite this he pushes himself to be more, to do better. And he holds the people surrounding him to a higher standard alongside him. By now he’s been through hell, and he’s seen a fair bit suffering, so he can relate to the broken and the tortured souls who some might call past grace. As a warden, he offers understanding, hope and a second chance at something greater to his inmate. He’s seen the proof that it’s possible for someone like that to change in his own world, so he won’t give up. He won’t fail his inmate, or himself.

Item: Crichton’s warden object will be a small, handmade journal that he used to write his notes in his own world.

Abilities/Powers: John Crichton is a fully trained astronaut who has flown several space missions, including one as flight commander prior to his adventures aboard the alien ship Moya. Astronaut training can encompass a wide range of skills, including flight training, navigation, mechanical engineering, first aid and survival techniques. His status as an astronaut also means that he has passed stringent health and fitness requirements.

He has also developed, in his time running from Peacekeepers, Scarrans, and half-breeds, better than average skills as a marksman. He is best with his pulse pistol, named Winona, but can also operate various other forms of projectile weaponry reliably. He’s decently scrappy in a fight but has fairly limited training in actual martial art. What he know’s he’s learned through hands-on experience.

Along with his basic trainable abilities, he also has secret wormhole knowledge hidden in his subconscious mind. He was gifted this knowledge by an extremely powerful alien race who intended that he should never know of its existence consciously. Thanks to the efforts of Scorpius and Harvey both, that knowledge is no longer a secret, but at present Crichton has still only had limited success in unlocking its true potential. He is beginning to access it, but it is still very difficult for him to make sense of.

If and when he does unlock the knowledge his abilities will include sensing and predicting the position of wormholes, navigating wormholes (including using them to travel forward and backward into time), and causing instabilities in wormholes as a form of weaponization.

(A Note: Crichton has a second personality, which he named Harvey, residing in his mind. Harvey is the result of a neuro implant that was inserted into Crichton's brain by one of his enemies named Scorpius. The actual chip that Harvey was housed in has been removed by this point in canon, but the personality itself remains as a permanent fixture in Crichton's mind. There is more information about Harvey further in this app, and he is, of course, mentioned in the history links provided. But I thought it best to make note of this here in order to avoid confusion.)

Harvey’s abilities: Harvey has certain abilities of his own where it concerns Crichton. He can see and hear everything that Crichton does but can interpret that information independent of Crichton. He can appear to Crichton as a visual hallucination or talk to him as an auditory one. But more often he converses with Crichton internally by putting him into a trance while he speaks to him as a sort waking daydream. These meetings of the mind do come with full visual, audio and tactile immersion, and can feel completely real to both parties.

He can also influence Crichton’s thoughts subtly, and in extreme cases, usually, when Crichton is somehow weakened or distracted, he can bodily control his host. He is, however, significantly weaker since his physical neurochip has been removed from Crichton’s brain, and this possession of a sort can only last for a very limited amount of time and takes an incredible amount of effort on Harvey’s part to perform.

Personality:

John Crichton is eternally an optimist. Through all the strife he’s seen, and all the horror he’s personally witnessed he stubbornly clings to the hope for something better. And when it seems all the world is out to get him, he refuses to surrender. Despite all he’s been through, he remains upbeat, and more importantly, he continues to see the best in others and in the strange world around him.

He is a man of principle. He values honesty, loyalty and above all, life. He’s constantly striving to do what he believes is the right thing, and does not like to see innocents hurt. In general, he disapproves of violence. When forced into a conflict, he takes every opportunity to solve problems through peaceful compromise. Killing, he thinks, should be viewed as an absolute last resort. But he understands that sometimes it is the only option and he does not hesitate to do what is necessary when the time comes.

He often struggles with the morality of what he’s done but one thing is absolutely clear. He values the people he loves over all else. He is willing to make extreme sacrifices to protect his friends. He has put his life on the line for them without question, and he has many times killed in the name of protecting them. He does everything in his power to see them safe; the times where he has failed to do so weigh heavily on him.

Crichton is intelligent and intuitive, but his outgoing and talkative nature cause many to discount him as an idiot. He becomes very frustrated at times with the many species of alien he meets because they will treat him as an ignorant child. Somewhere along the line he gave up arguing the point and transformed his behavior to be outwardly the fool they expected to see. But that assumption, that he is only a bumbling moron is often a fatal mistake to his enemies, who are often surprised too late to learn he is not as incompetent as he seems.

Crichton has a talent for creative thought which allows him to come up with solutions no one else might ever have considered. It even becomes a running joke among his crew that Crichton always “has a plan.” Unfortunately said plans tend to run to the “so crazy they just might work” side. But often enough, they do work, if not exactly as intended.

On a daily basis, he remains upbeat, and seemingly easy going, constantly cracking jokes, quoting pop culture and just generally prancing around acting obnoxious and loud, much to the chagrin of his crewmates. He has a particularly annoying penchant for assigning nicknames to people, and he’s not very careful about who he does it to. His sense of humor runs towards the ironic with a large helping of sarcasm on the side, and he has more than once gotten himself into a heap of trouble by sassing the wrong person at the wrong time.

But the jokes and the references, that seem to be so inconsequential in passing, are really much more. They are his way of coping with a world he doesn't understand and often comes at odd with. They let him interpret his alien surroundings while helping him retain some semblance of connection to the world he left behind. Beyond the jokes and the silly movie quotes, lies the serious mind of a man lost adrift in a world far beyond anything he was ever prepared for.

In truth, the image of the fool he projects outwardly is a symptom of the turmoil he feels on the inside. He has a darkness brooding in him that he allows very few to see. Much of the innocent naivety he once had was stripped from him by his encounter with his nemesis Scorpius. His torture at Scorpius’s hands left his mind fractured, and there still remain days where he struggles to put back the pieces of his sanity.

He has a dark secret, a monster living inside of him, or so he views it. A second personality, dubbed Harvey, was implanted in his brain by Scorpius during his torture session. Harvey lurks always in the dark corners of Crichton’s subconscious whispering to him and trying to influence him. His ultimate job is to force Crichton to give away the secrets of wormholes to Scorpius. He picks at the worst parts of Crichton’s personality, trying to force the cracks. In the past, Harvey has made Crichton do terrible things, to hurt people he loves. The threat of it happening again is ever present. Crichton lives in constant fear of losing the battle for his mind to the likes of Harvey. Or worse, he’s afraid one day Harvey might start making more sense to him. He does not want to become the monster he lives in fear of.

Though Crichton is an admirable man, he does have his failings. As giving as he can be, he also, at times can be just as selfish. When there is something he badly wants, his obsessive nature can lead him to ignore others in favor of getting what he desires. He can be incredibly pig-headed when he’s chasing after his obsession. He will let himself get distracted by his own thoughts, often stubbornly ignoring the opinions and advice of his crewmates in his quest to achieve his goal. This is especially true when it concerns the possibility of him finding a way home to Earth (through wormholes or otherwise) or when it has anything to do with his love for Aeryn. These are his great weaknesses. Especially for the sake of Aeryn, he will forsake all his good principles.

He’s very prideful, and that large ego of his can make him come off as exceptionally self-righteous. He will often lecture others on their own moral failings, sometimes leading him to reveal himself a hypocrite when he does not acknowledge those same failings in himself.

His arrogance can also lead him, at times, to be very controlling. He likes things to go his way, and he can become very childish, even jealous when they do not. Beyond that, he has a tendency to believe his answer is the always the correct one, and can sometimes have trouble viewing an argument from an unfamiliar perspective. He has become much better at it through his interactions with different alien species over time, but he still has a tendency to place higher validity on his Human perspectives, over those of dissimilar races.

In the end, he’s just a man trying to stay alive in a world full of danger, where all his enemies seek to do worse than simply kill him, and where he knows his very presence endangers everyone he cares about. He does his best to hold himself together, and to carry his burdens while helping his friends work through their own problems. At times he breaks down, but he never loses the will to keep fighting. He believes he can make things right again. He continues his search for peace. He won’t ever give up, and he will do everything it takes to make it home.

Harvey's Personality: Harvey is a part of John, but he has a distinct and separate personality of his own. For this reason, I feel it necessary to give him his own brief write up.

Harvey started as a clone of Scorpius, John’s main villain’s, personality. Scorpius is intelligent, patient and utterly ruthless. He does not seem to harbor any moral qualms whatsoever and has made it clear he will do absolutely anything it takes to achieve his goal. That goal is revenge. He wants to utterly obliterate a race known as Scarrans, and he will use any means necessary. Harvey is one of those means. Harvey was given a directive: find the wormhole information in Crichton’s mind, safeguard it, and ensure it’s return to Scorpius. The wormhole knowledge itself is only a further means to the goal of Scarran ultimate extermination. It is by Scorpius’ calculations, the best means to this end.

Harvey, however, could not escape being affected by living in John’s mind. He has perused and even interacted with John’s memories and has begun to enjoy the experience. He’s absorbed some of Crichton’s humor as well, causing him to be much less uptight than his original counterpart Scorpius. He makes jokes and seems to enjoy bringing Crichton into ridiculous scenarios inside his own mind while speaking with him.

It may be that he is simply bored with his current existence and gets a certain amount of pleasure out of taunting John. With his neural chip removed, his purpose for being was presumably satisfied. Yet, still, he remains, inexplicably, a prisoner in Crichton’s mind with little left to accomplish. He had at first considered trying to kill his host as a way of ending his meaningless existence, but after some consideration, he chose to collaborate instead. He could not deny the survival instincts of the original Scorpius in him. Now his main goal is ensuring his survival by preserving Crichton’s own life. Together host and parasite have formed an uneasy alliance, but neither has any great love for the other.

Barge Reactions: By this time in Crichton’s canon he’s well and truly passed being surprised by much, including scenery and strange life forms. He spent the first year of his adventures in space flipping over every new little thing, but two more years and a lot of trauma later, he’s mostly over that crap. He’s extremely adaptable and good at just rolling with the punches. A little confusion about how this thing works won’t phase him all that much. He might still be a tad skeptical over the concept of a reformation prison barge, but who is he to say it won’t work? He’ll be giving it his best shot.

In the event of floods and breaches, he will be able to keep his cool under pressure and react appropriately to the situation at hand. He figures himself as something of a team leader and is used to being the one with bright ideas, but he can do equally well collaborating with others in a time of crisis. He may argue a little if he thinks his is the better plan, but he’ll put his ego down and listen when lives are at stake.

Harvey Reaction to the Barge: Harvey will not be perturbed by the strangeness of surroundings or people on the barge, as he contains all the memories of his well-traveled counterpart Scorpius, but he also will not be pleased by this little detour into civil service. Beyond finding it a complete waste of time and effort better spent on unlocking the potential of wormholes or finding a place of safety to reside, he will be taking this arrangement as a personal threat for one very good reason: Crichton’s deal with the Admiral will be his services as Warden in exchange for the elimination of Harvey.

Harvey’s sole motive at this point in canon is survival. Obviously, he won’t be cooperating with this agenda in the least. In fact, he will do everything in his power to sabotage Crichton’s progress with his inmate (something that is likely to affect other characters in play, not least of all, Crichton’s own inmate). Harvey’s ability to influence, interrupt and in extreme cases bodily control Crichton will be his tools for sabotage. It is even possible that he might, given enough time and effort, attempt to form his own relations, even pacts, with inmates to further his cause.

Harvey is still practical. Therefore, In the event of floods or breaches, he will still likely do his best to keep Crichton alive and to cooperate as he must towards that end. At the same time, as he will be aware of the impermanence of death, there may come times when Harvey feels the best way to make his point is to withhold his assistance in preventing injury or death to his host.

Harvey’s ultimate goal will be to convince Crichton, by any means, to leave the barge and return to his former life before completing his task and reaping its benefits. Just as his originator Scorpius, he will be ruthless, and this means he will not much care who his efforts might hurt in the process.

Can someone please explain to me…

[The video flips rapidly from the view of an annoyed looking Crichton to the image of a sheep standing on the bed in his quarters.]

why there is a sheep in my bed?

I know we’ve all heard the expression ‘counting sheep,’ but I’ve been sleeping just fine thank you. So whoever this thing belongs to better get their butts over here pronto and get it out of my room!

You’ve got thirty minutes. If it’s not out of here by then, it’s gonna be lamb chop dinner.

[He waves his pulse pistol in front of the video.]

Capisce?

Sample RP:

Crichton sighed coming into his room. He tossed his notebook on the bed, and then joined it there a moment later, sinking heavily down and settling with his elbows propped on his knees and his face in his hands. What the hell was he supposed to do?

“I didn’t know when I took this job it was gonna end up looking like a damn Loony Tunes re-run.” He said to the empty walls.

“Doesn’t matter how much I try, I fail harder that Wile E. Coyote falling off a cliff with a rocket strapped to his back and trailing an anvil on a rope.”

He rubbed vigorously at his face, “What the hell am I doing? I’m never gonna get through to this guy.”

Sure, some people change. Some people turn good. Aeryn, his Aeryn had. But maybe that was because she already had good in her, waiting to be discovered. Was that the thing missing from his personal Road Runner? Was there nothing good in him? Was there nothing there to capture? Or was it just Crichton? Did he just keep letting it slip from his grip?

“I’m not a psychiatrist, how the hell am I supposed to know these things?”

Not a psychiatrist no, but if things kept up like this he was gonna need one. Look at him, he was talking to the walls again. Or was he?

I take it you’re ready to hear my advice?

“Go away Harve. Just because I’m talking to myself don’t mean I expect an answer.”

But you were. You forget, I know your mind.

Crichton felt that subtle disorientation as his consciousness was pulled inward at Harvey’s beckoning. Outwardly his eyes glossed and he no longer saw the wall of his room in front of him.

Instead, there was Harvey, the grotesquely stretched grey flesh of his lips was currently covered by a yellow mask shaped like a beak and the rest of his usual black leather bodysuit had changed to match. Now he looked like a twisted version of that Loony Tune bird who taunted the Coyote so.

Harve, what the hell are you do’n? You look even more ridiculous than usual.
Crichton stepped forward and pulled the beak off Harvey’s face, revealing the jagged grin beneath.

No more so than you trying to reform your poor, pathetic inmate.

Oh? And what would you suggest?

Give up! He exclaimed cheerfully, Throw in the towel! Go back home to your life and forget this whole thing ever happened! So you lost? So what? You should be used to that by now.

Yeah, and then you get to live happily ever after. Crichton snarls, No. I don’t think so Harve.

If you want to go on living as a miserable failure be my guest.

You know what?! Can it Harve! I got enough critics, I don’t need to be taking crap from my own head too!

Crichton forcefully willed himself out of the trance, and the wall of his room suddenly blossomed again before his vision. He waited, blinking a few times, until he felt the conscious presence of Harvey dissipate completely back into the far reaches of his mind, then added under his breath, “Maybe there’s no help for either of us…”

Why had the Admiral trusted him to do this? He barely had himself together sometimes. Ugh. All he had himself now was a nice big headache.

He flopped back on the bed and held one hand up above him. He imagined he was holding up a wooden sign, pretending to hold it out next to him, and to himself he mouthed...

“Help...”

Special Notes: I do intend to bring Harvey into the game along with John since he does technically still exist in Crichton’s head at his current canon point. I have given Harvey appropriate write-ups in this app to make sure my characterizations of him can be scrutinized at the same level as Crichton’s. I will also have a permissions post for him so people in game can be fully aware of him and the implications he might have on their characters.
